sgraffito tile

Sgraffito tile :

For my sgraffito tile i decided to do plants. My inspiration for this design was nothing more but the plant aesthetic. I wasn't here to make my slab or pick the color glaze for my base, i was given a purplish color glazed slab and continued on from there. I used different tools to scrape the surface. It took me a few scrapes before i got the hang of a neat scrape and stroke but i finally ended up getting it. After I finished scraping and carving i used a clear glaze (as shown in the picture below) to give the tile its final touched before it was finished. I got it fired and then it was finished. I'm not sure what color glaze was used for the surface color since i didn't paint it on but I thought it was going to be more on the purple tone, I was surprised to see it was navy blue which i actually prefer.

For this overall product I think it came out pretty well. It was my second time doing a sgraffito tile, and although i actually like the one i made last year better i still thought this one was pretty well scraped and had lot of extra detail. Next time I would probably try using smaller tools to really get the clearing picture and detail, although it is hard to make small details on these tiles.
