set of mugs

For this project we were given the direction to create a mug set of at least 4 mugs; at least two of them containing handles. We used the same slab process as the one summative slab mug. using the clay presser I made my first slab; once my slab was done, I pressed this piece of antique fabric down onto it using a rolling pin. After the pattern was pressed on, I rolled the slab onto the tennis ball container that was wrapped with newspaper. After it was rolled on I let a piece of the clap overlap the opposite side. I rolled small pieces of clay and scored and slipped them on to almost look like stitches. Then I slipped a handle. You make a handle by grabbing a carrot kind o shaped piece of clay; you then dunk it in water and use your thumb and index figure to for a handle like piece. You have to let the clay dry out for a little before scoring it onto the mug. If the clay is too wet it wont stick correctly and will end up folding or slowly dropping off of its placement on the mug. One the handle was able to be placed on, the mug was ready to be fired. Once fired; it could be glazed. I used the same 3-5 glazes for each of the mugs in the set that you will see listed in the images below. For my second and third mug, I decided to keep it simple and easy, I left both mugs smooth without a pattern; one having a handle and the other not. My mugs coordinate by the colors, because I thought using different sizes, patterns, textures, and lengths would be fun. For my last and final mug which just happens to be my favorite all around; I used a floral design and pressed it in using a rolling pin. This one doesn't have a handle and I don't mind that it doesn't, it still looks the most appealing. The colors blends, shades and tones go together so well and orderly. Overall the set all together came out pretty nice and I wouldn't change much about the work and finished product. The materials I used were patterned fabric, ruler, glazes, wooden tools, rolling pin and needle tool.

I changed a few of my mugs, intentionally my plan was for them to all be floral, but I though adding or not adding different designs would add more creativity. I think all floral would have been nice, now seeing that my favorite mug was the floral print one I had made. I ended up smoothing out one of the floral prints I had because I didn't like how it looked at the time, and then decided I liked the cleanliness and neatness of the smooth one so I made a second one. I don't have anything bad to say about the smooth ones, the only mug I would change would be the first one of the set with the old fashion swirl printed into it; I just can't seem to find any like for it.

There isn't any meaning or reasoning behind this work. I simply just liked the color scheme and values of it. I think the shades of blues and green I picked look really cool and pleasant together, they also blend extremely well. I had my ups and downs with this project but the final product didn't disappoint.
