historical coil pot

Historical Coil Pot

for My historical piece I found a vase that I really liked. This was made in Egypt, using a white clay. I picked this vase because of the simplicity and calming color and tone choice. I wasn't really looking for anything really vibrant or overwhelming so this vase fit what I was looking for perfectly. The inspiration From this piece was not only the color but the shape and form, I think a vase is a really good idea, especially since its a bit out of my comfort zone. I had never attempted the curves of a vase so it was a change.

We started out with coils and a slab for my base. I started from the bottom and built up. Since I chose to do a vase you need to be aware of where the clay comes out the most and when it goes back in. The top is smaller compared to the bottom so in order to get the right measurements you can match the vase you're making to the image. I struggled getting the points right of where I needed to shorten my coils and then enlarge them again, so I had to fix that up quite a lot through the process.

I loved the idea of finding a historical piece and then recreating it because it could never necessarily be identical but the process of making and shaping it to be identical Is really fun.

process:

I started the coils by building up, and smoothing out the ridges while I continued uop.

At this point I had to keep making the middle section skinnier and smaller because it was still to large compared to the image

Once I managed to make the middle part smaller I worked out the top piece which came out a little bit to give the vase effect.

this is the pot once I had basically finished and just needed to work on smoothing it out.

Finished product before fired compared to the real vase.

After fired (no glaze)

final product:

Of Course they are not identical but you get the idea that I tried to create the piece. The colors are similar, texture, and size. Some things I could fix up would be the glaze, i could have used a less glossy glaze and more of a matte, I also could have made the vase a little longer. Other than that I think it came out well especially for my first time trying to recreate something.
