Sgraffito

Artist Statement:

I am calling this sgraffito tile because that is the technique that we used to make this. The subject is a bunch of shapes based off of Native American designs/patterns. I chose to create this specific work because I likes the different shapes and how they fit together. For materials I used a clay tile and a carving tool. I used a variety of techniques and methods including carving which is how I made the shapes. While creating this work I paid close attention to symmetry by trying to make the same sized shapes on both sides. I wanted my artwork to look neat and I did that by carving strait lines. To add interest to my composition I used pattern by fitting the shapes together. I like the way that the overall tile turned out, and I am proud of my design. However, I struggled with making the lines strait. If I created another work like this I might add a little more designs. My work shows that I learned how to use clay to make sgraffito.
