Red October Recap

One out, bottom of the 10th inning, Johan Rojas is up to bat, 1-2 count. “Johan Rojas and the pitch…….. It’s a hit up the middle of the field Pache around third going home… and the Phillies won it! Walk-off hit from Rojas!” That was the play by play of the biggest walk off for the Phillies this year. The wild card clincher!

The Phillies are in the postseason once again which means another Red October for the Phils. Welcome back to the Black Rock newspaper. This newspaper article will be covering the Phillies postseason which is their second in a row. Last year, the Phillies made it to the 2022 World Series, however, they lost to the Houston Astros in a 4-2 series.

The Phillies have started the postseason off hot with a 2-0 sweep over the Miami Marlins but are still +2500 to win the World Series according to ESPN.

The Phillies have just won in a 3-1 series over the Atlanta Braves the exact same amount of games as last year. The Phillies started off amazing with back to back wins in Atlanta. In the very first game of the series the Phils had 5 steals which is a franchise postseason record for them.In the first loss of the postseason for the Phils Zack Wheeler pitched 5 straight innings without a hit, until a walk on Ronald Acuña Jr and a line drive single by Ozzie Albies to right field in the 6th inning.

After that loss the Phils came back to Philadelphia to win 10-2 and give them a 2-1 lead. The very next game Castellanos and Trea Turner hit back to back homers to give the Phillies 1-3 lead in the game and the NLDS win 3-1

The Phillies have won their first NLCS game against the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3. In the first inning Kyle Schwarber hit a 407 foot home run off the first pitch of the bottom 1st, it was also Kyle’s 4th leadoff home run in the postseason and career which makes it the new postseason record for leadoff home runs in the MLB. Trea Turner then lined out only for Bryce Harper to hit a homer first pitch to him on his 31st birthday! In the second inning Nick Castellanos wanted to join the party with a solo shot to make it 3-0.

The Phillies have won the second game of their best of 7 game series against Arizona in a 10-0 win. ESPN states, “For the Phillies, the burst of Red October continued:  they hit 15 home runs in the last four postseason games which is a postseason record for the MLB.” Aaron Nola pitched a remarkable game with 6 innings of work, striking out 7 and allowing only 3 hits. Arizona hosts the next game at Chase Field.

“The first ball, deep in left, see you later!” The Phillies tie it up 1-1. There was speculation that Alec Bohm may have been the worst player in the entire NLCS. No one will ever deny that that was the clutchest hit he had all series. He proved them all wrong. In the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings the Arizona Diamondbacks closers shut down the Phillies, allowing no runs and struck out a combined 4 allowing 1 hit and 2 walks. The final out was a fly ball down the right field line hit by Jake Cave. The celebration for the D-backs started.

In conclusion, the Phillies have been eliminated from the 2023 postseason. Last year the phillies made it to the World Series and lost to the Houston Astros this year they lost in the Semifinals to the Diamondbacks. Hopefully a more successful red October next year.
