What Does it Mean to be Preppy?
By: Erica Reznik
Lots of people have these specific questions: “Why are people preppy?” or, “what is the hype about Lululemon?” or, “ do I really need all this skincare?”. I will answer all of these questions later in this story. You see, Gen Alpha, or generation Alpha, people who are born between 2010-2024, started this trend. Many people thought “Being Preppy” started around 2022-23, but that's not true. “Preppy” started in 1912. I know you might not believe me, but it’s true! The Brook Brothers started this iconic trend. But, they thought of preppy differently. You see, preppy things these days are Lululemon, Aviator Nation, skin care, and lots of other things! But, preppy back then was very, very different. They still wore trendy brands, but not like this stuff. They wore cardigans, polo shirts, and Mary Jane shoes. All this stuff was called “preppy” back then. Now for the questions.“ Why are people preppy?” That is a questionable question. Anyways, my answer to this is they just want to try a different lifestyle. (you can send me an email if you have a different response) People, mostly girls, all like the same things. Well yeah, they can like different things, but when a trend comes along, most girls or people in general, need it or love it. For example, the Stanley cup. Most people already have one. I have 2! There is nothing wrong with having a Stanley and loving it. Ok, next question! “What is the hype about Lululemon?” That is a great question. Lululemon is a sports clothing brand and the company has had a lot of teens and kids come in and buy their products. One of the lululemon employees says,” We have never had this many kids in a store looking at womens clothing.” Lululemon is most known for their “ everywhere belt bag.” Lots and lots of people have it. I have a black one, and my nine year old sister has a fluffy black one. I definitely think that a nine year old shouldn't be going to Lululemon.
Anyway, let's get to the last question. “ Do I really need all this skincare?” This question is the most popular question amongst girls across America. Many, many 10 year olds have been going into sephora and making skincare messes at a specific brand called “ Drunk Elephant.'' Drunk Elephant is an expensive skincare brand that some Sephora stores had to remove testers from because kids were playing with expensive products. I do believe that a suitable age to start doing skincare is at 11. Start with a cleanser, serum, and moisturizer, and as you get older you can use more things. Thank you for reading and enjoy the rest of your day!
