The Big Laugh
“Why am going to be this… thing for Halloween again?” I asked my mom, heavily gesturing to the rainbow clown costume laying on the floor.
“Because!”
“Because what?”
“Because I said so!” Mom sighed and picked the costume up. “Look, I know you don’t like it, but it’s what you’re going to wear.” I rolled my eyes, and asked hopefully, “Do I have to trick or treat this year?”
The answer was yes. Yes, I do. I have to wear that rainbow lump around all night. Begrudgingly, I put my costume on, grabbed my basket, grabbed my phone, and finally walked out the door.
The second I walked out I braced myself for laughter. Because why not? I’m a girl with a face covered in white makeup and a fat red nose. I have a big jumpsuit and the most embarrassing, clunky shoes on Earth.
“Hey, kid! I like your costume!” an older kid yelled from across the street. “I mean it!”
I shrugged and walked to the next door. I rang the doorbell and waited. I waited about a minute. I decided I would go, when I heard the door open.
“Trick or treat!” I said excitedly, turned around, and smiled though my costume wasn’t great. It was a young girl, no more than four. She looked sad, and I felt bad. (But not just because she didn’t give me candy.)
I thought, Aren’t clowns supposed to make people happy? They are. So I grabbed my big red nose, and I squished. The nose made a little horn sound, and the girl laughed. I did it again, and she laughed some more. She ran into the house, came back out, and happily tossed me a Twix. “Trick or treat!” she called after me. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad after all!
