On January 26, 2024, the Black Rock Winterfest was held and in 5th grade, it went very wrong. What was supposed to be “fun” turned into a complete disaster. At the beginning, nothing was getting started. When the cone challenge started, there were too many people and people on the same team were going up against one another. There was a biased and unfair call to all of the teams. After that ended, they started explaining the next activity, relay race, but it was confusing and there weren’t enough materials and people didn’t know what to do. On top of that, people were taking head starts and were cheating. I, for one, even noticed my team cheating. The next activity was Hula-hoop chain. One team started halfway through and other teams didn’t even know what to do. They didn’t even do the shoelace challenge! When they asked for a round of applause, no one clapped and some people booed. With many people in a bad mood, we headed to the Family Feud only for that to be a let-down also. It started off with biasing but it wasn’t that bad until the last round. In the last round, it was themed “Things to Celebrate.” Team 2 answered first with a birthday. Correct. Then they guessed Anniversary. For some reason, incorrect. Kids started to stand up, very upset. Their next guess was holidays. IN-CO-RRECT!!!!!! What the heck. Zev Hoffman, one of the writers of this article stood up on a chair, threw his arms in the air, and looked around for support. Kids started booing as it went to team 1. They guessed the baby shower. Incorrect. They said, “We have ran out of time but here is one of the correct answers:” What they said, set off the crowd. They said FOR FUN!!! Kids started to get upset and boo. Why not because if a holiday is not a reason to celebrate, and neither is a baby shower of anniversary, then how is it for fun!?! Kids started chanting things such as “Not For Fun.” Some people left happy, and others furious. It was a complete failure compared to Fallfest.
So Fallfest started off with free merch, music, and high energy, while Winterfest had shushing and waiting. Fallfest started off with the exciting musical chairs; while Winterfest had the cone game; of which there were too many people and too few cones (as said above). That resulted in people from the same team or homeroom facing each other. That led to chaos and confusion. Event 2: Fallfest had the tricycle race; which was slightly disappointing, but worked, while Winterfest had the mismatched Relay, Bat spin, Scooter, and basketball event. It was unorganized with unclear directions and less supplies that there needed to be. The kids were confused, leading to no clear winner. For event 3; Fallfest had the energetic, crazy table surfing. Winterfest had got the hula hoop to the other side of the gym, which wasn’t clear, leading to teams stopping halfway thinking they were done. While Fallfest didn’t have a 4th event, the Winterfest one was CANCELED, because they had too many pauses; so they say.
Hopefully Springfest (if there is one) will be better.
