Pineapple on Pizza
By: Qile Wu, Class of 2024
Pineapple on pizza has been a controversial, and sometimes sensitive topic to discuss. A lot of my friends are anti pineapple on pizza, but I disagree with them. In this article, I will present the viewpoints of both sides on this issue.
Anti Pineapple on Pizza:
The main reason that people are against putting pineapple on pizza is because they see it as a way of insult to the Italian Culture—Pizza as a food originated from Italy and it was not designed that way.
According to my fellow staff writer Hudson Howey, who also happens to also be a pizza restaurant employee: traditional Italian pizza involves putting “anything but pineapple on it.”
Pineapple is a fruit from South America. Therefore, putting South American fruit in European food is deemed an inappropriate combination. Moreover, some people argued that Italians dislike pineapple on pizza, suggesting that it is incredibly unethical and immoral to alter traditional food practices without the consent of the culture it originates from, as it shows disrespect.
Pro Pineapple on Pizza:
However, despite the arguments presented above, there are still reasons why pineapple would be a good addition to pizza.
People who support putting pineapple on pizza don’t consider pineapple on pizza as a way of insulting Italian culture. If adding South American food upgrades and improves the Italian food, why shouldn’t it be added?Â
Additionally, food is a matter of predilection, and if someone likes pineapple on pizza, they find it gustatorily pleasing. Hence, difference in opinions when it comes to food is completely normal.
Conclusion:
I support putting pineapple on pizza. I see it more as a personal preference, and I just don’t believe that it has a whole lot of relation to culture. Pineapple on pizza would not destroy culture diversity but to improve.
Finally, I just want to say that whether you agree or disagree with pineapple on pizza or not, it’s good to keep an open mind to different opinions, because diversity, especially in diverse perspectives is a good thing.
