The links in the VA & Obama Care TAB are about the discrimination of partially disabled service connected non retired veterans with families or spouses who want to get health insurance through the Obama Care or Affordable Health Care website. This also covers non retired veterans using the VA health system (The VA is not health insurance!).
This Obama Care goof up does not pertain or affect the following Veterans (double check whether this does or does not apply to you by competent advisors):
100% disabled veterans usually have ChampVA health insurance. They can use the VA health system and not have to dis-enroll.
Retired veterans have Tricare insurance (although Obama care said they could not keep their 26 year old children on their policy) I don't know if this has been solved yet. They can use the VA health system and not have to dis-enroll.
Non - service connected veterans using the VA and don't have a dime to their name or can not afford any health insurance. At least they can get an annual physical. If they can get into the VA system as a Category 7.
Service connected disabled veterans using the VA and don't have a dime to their name or can not afford any health insurance. This is their safety net to at least get an annual physical and have their service connected disabilities cared for.
Veterans who have health insurance through their job or a spouses job. They can use the VA health system and not have to dis-enroll. They usually have to meet the means test now days or have been in the VA system for years. See the following link for the priority groups and eligibility requirements. http://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/resources/priority_groups.asp
Non -Service connected veterans on Medicare. They can use the VA health system and not have to dis-enroll.
Service connected partially disabled veterans on Medicare. They can use the VA health system and not have to dis-enroll.
There maybe other people I have missed that do not have to worry about this issue.
If you like to gamble with your life savings and hope the VA will get you into the VA hospital 120 miles away for a heart operation or any operation. I have a good acquaintance who did this after he retired but was not eligible for Medicare yet. The VA came back for reimbursement of medical bills as they found he had not met the means test on his VA application and placed liens on his property and made life so miserable for him he had to liquidate assets to pay for his VA operation.
The vet who just wants to avoid the small penalty from the IRS for not having health insurance and thinks the VA will take care his every health care or operation need in a non-insurance system. You better have a four leaf clover in your pocket!
