The missile complexes were originally equipped with three filter boxes that contained dielectric oil with about 25,000 parts per million (ppm) of the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Aroclor 1254. These filter boxes acted as radio frequency interference filters for communications and missile guidance. The three original filter boxes contained varied amounts of dielectric oil. The Level 1 filter box contained 4.440 liters of dielectric oil, the Level 2 filter box contained 12.125 liters, and the filter box in the cableway between blast doors 6 and 7 contained 10.381 liters.
From another MFTs' email on PCB's:
The PCB issues I was addressing mostly dealt with the filter boxes in the silo, because we routinelly wiped them up as no big deal until we found out about the exposure issue.

From a HVAC Tech:
For example: The government did not waste any time at all telling the women who maintained our sites about PCB contamination from leaking lighting ballast, transformers and electric capacitor/filters that working with them would cause birth defects. A.F. men were told nothing of the sort at the time. I learned it from a woman from my shop who thought it was wrong men were not included in the briefings. The women were also offered special jobs out of maintenance who thought it would affect them, some just blew it off and said it was part of the job. So who do you believe anymore?

From an ex- Titan Crew Commander who is now an Environmental Toxicologist at an Alabama University:
Terry,
Great information and significant. These are very high concentrations and AROCLOR 1254 is one the most dangerous PCB congeners toxicologically. Just so you will know, that number means 12 = PCB and 54 refers to the percentage of the structure of interest in the mixture. AROCLOR is a trade name of Monsanto’s PCBs manufactured, BTW, in Anniston, AL.
