November 10, 2015. Rules or Conscience?
Prov 3:3 Love & faithfulness bound around my neck, written on my heart.
No one likes to live by a bunch of rules, but most of us accept them as a necessary part of life. Proverbs 3:3 makes me think of the paradox between following rules and our conscience. Binding something around my neck sounds like the effort of living by rules. Writing something on my heart sounds like following my conscience.
When my character takes on a godly nature, my conscience leads me to naturally do what’s good and right. Unfortunately, my character contains deceptive flaws that justify selfish choices. Rules help me to avoid sinful choices that sometimes appeal to me.
So, even though our consciences can guide us without rules (Romans 2:15) they aren’t reliable or consistent (1 Cor 8:7; 1 Tim 4:2) so we need rules to guide us through uncertainty and test and shape our consciences.
