September 17, 2016. A Worthwhile Wait (a poem for Amanda).
A Worthwhile Wait.
I waited for you
When you appeared, I desired you
But I waited
When the time was right, you opened the door
My desire intensified
You were splendid, and I admired you
So close, the yearning intensified, a mounting flame
Your touch, so soft
Your kiss, so tender
I loved you, desired you, wanted to protect you
The longing deepened
Floating in a warm, bottomless pool of desire
Near you I slipped below the surface
Enveloped by your presence
Caught up in the current of passion I struggled
Determined not to lose control
Finally came that night, when it was right
We surrendered
Experienced unrestrained submission
Pleasure
Passion
You
Me
We became one
I was an eagle
I leapt from the precipice
Wings tucked, feeling the rush
In rising warmth my wings spread
Upward soaring
Around again and again, soaring ever higher
How high can this go?
I do not know
Abruptly, unexpectedly an intense burst
Flashing light, hot, beautiful
With you
The weightless floating
Peaceful rest
Love
You
And the joyful lingering of that light burst
Unlike a flash, there and gone
This one burnt an image
Still there in my heart
After all these years
A memory more perfect
Than reality
We made it as good as we possibly could
When the time was right
Our wedding night
