October 9, 2018, Possibilities of a Limitless Creator
When I was a young boy I found it difficult to believe that heaven could be big enough for all the people who thought they were going there. It was a bit unnerving. I felt uneasy with the idea that there might not be enough space there for me. Eventually I began to realize how big the universe was and I understood that a creator who could make this universe would have no trouble making space in heaven for every soul who ever lived on this tiny planet. Eventually I realized that space itself is a characteristic of this physical universe and might be meaningless in the spirit world beyond life in this universe.
Another thing I struggled with was how God could listen to all the prayers and thoughts of everyone on the planet. Then I wondered how he could rejoice over good things people did in one place and be angry at evil going on someplace else at the same time. Eventually I accepted that a God capable of creating this universe could perceive things everywhere at once, taking everything in and feeling mixed reactions to all that is happening simultaneously. When I eventually realized that time is a dimension of this created universe, I accepted that the creator dwells outside of time and the concepts of things happening in sequential order or simultaneously is meaningless to him.
As I contemplated why God may have created such a vast universe, I decided he must appreciate beauty and simply enjoys creating. I wondered how much of his creation does he actually observe and enjoy. Does he see every star, planet, nebula, black whole, etc.? Does he enjoy watching all the galaxies spin? If he sees the beauty of a nebula over 100 light years across, does he also enjoy the beauty in a tiny flower? Does he watch microscopic organisms? Does he enjoy the complex chemistry happening all the time in our cells? Surely, he can see molecules and atoms. Does he see beauty in the interactions of protons, neutrons, electrons, and photons? What about smaller particles and energy fields? Does the creator see everything from the big picture of the entire universe to the smallest particles and energy interactions?
If our creator is limitless and dwells outside of time then he could be aware of every atom, every subatomic particle, every photon of electromagnetic energy, every force exerted on anything in the entire universe throughout the entire existence of the universe. If there are other universe, this limitless creator could have the same awareness in those.
How can we ever know the mind of such a creator? Only in minute glimpses because our perception abilities are very limited.
I’ve seen enough evidence to believe there is a creator behind this universe. If that creator isn’t as limitless as what I’ve described here, he must be close enough to be far beyond my comprehension and understanding. I am certainly not qualified to judge the creator or the goodness of creation. I often question things in creation such as why apparently pointless pain and suffering exist, but I’m okay with having those questions unanswered. I don’t have to conclude that the creator isn’t good, is detached, or doesn’t really exist, just because I can’t answer such questions.
