Greetings,
As the year passes, you will find this page easier to read. Even in the first days, you will need to learn to find your daily lessons and homework here.
Helpful advice:
The date follows the international format (similar to that found on passports and used throughout the rest of the world OTHER than the U.S.). 10.01.23 is thus January 10th as opposed to October 1st. Remember: día, mes, año.

Día 1…Lunes 28.08 (A)
a. Welcome and this is your class…¡90 minutos es much tiempo!
a. Expectations? (concerns, excitement, “whatever, lets just get started?”)
b. Introducing ME! Pass out “First days letter.” Work through it. You need to know a little about the class format and the person behind the steering wheel.
a. Personal Background
b. Class Dynamics
c. Homework expectations
d. RESPECT goes both ways. I will respect your time. I expect you to respect mine. No wasted “busy” assignments on my end means you do the work I give you.
e. QUESTIONS so far?
c. FLIPPED CLASSROOM. What is it?
a. Explain the theory and data.
b. Show some clips.
d. Let’s take care of logistics.
a. It appears the school has switched to CANVAS. Please go to the CANVAS site to see if it shows up for you. There should be an assignment there. Please read it and do it (Introducing me video in English).
b. On that same canvas page, you should be able to see my website. Please go to it now. That is where you will find the daily lessons and homework assignments.
c. Website https://sites.google.com/site/spanishmaestrodavid/
i. Scroll down and lets talk about grades. I’ll walk you through each category. What you need to understand is the kinds of assignments you will have:
1. INTERPERSONAL, PRESENTATIONAL, INTERPRETIVE COMMUNICATION, plus a little grammar.
2. School Grade Plan: Note to self…FILL IN INFORMATION HERE AFTER IT HAS BEEN EXPLAINED TO ME…
ii. Look to the left (or top screen on some devices) and open the SPANISH 1 link.
1. The main page will remain the same all year. It has the instructional videos I will be assigning for homework (mostly in order) all year.
a. If you click on the left tab titled, “Calendario/Tarea Esp.1” you will see every lesson for the current academic quarter. For example, it will include Q1 at the start of the year.
b. At the end of each quarter, I will take the OLD lessos and store them “here.” It is the tab called “Spanish 1 syllabus and stuff…” You can always look back at what we have done all year.
2. Quick recap: Where do you find your daily lessons? Where do you access your homework (tarea)? How do you get extra support?
e. Let’s clear the air about class protocols, safety, etc.…
a. SOAR (Safety, Ownership, Achievement, Respect)
b. Other rules, protocols, expectations…(bathroom, food, etc.)
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)
1. Go to the website and click on the first video titled, “Begin Here” (3:27). You can also click on the link. Watch the video, take notes, be prepared to tell me what you saw in our next class.
Notes on taking notes for lecture videos and taking notes in general.
· Consider that if all you do is copy the words from the board you are mindlessly completing a task and it will not help you much down the road.
· HOWEVER…If you copy the information from the board as a start and add your own “notes to self” than you have changed from mindless copier to engaged note-taking student.
· Taking your own “lecture” notes to help you remember what you’ve seen will help you recall and practice the information over the long haul.
· Each person’s notes should be unique to the individual as we all recall/learn our own way.
2. Review the letter we went over in class with your parents. Have them complete the contact information sheet and bring it back to me in our next class.
Día 2…Miércoles 30.08 (A)
1. Did we finish everything from “día 1?”
a. Check that students remember where homework is posted.
b. Check that students remember where lessons and additional support are posted.
c. Check that students remember how their grades are calculated this year.
d. Check IF students have any follow up questions.
2. See if the 9th graders are surviving after having been through their full schedules once. Find out how many times each one has gotten lost. General check in.
3. Students explain last night’s video and put the information on the board. “Addressing the teacher.” Make sure they understand, “Sr. West” or “Sra. Gutierrez” is an American construction and not used in any Spanish speaking country.
4. Key Vocabulary for understanding assignments (On board—Students copy all words and discuss what they now and then what they need to learn):
texto examen lee (leer) estudia (estudiar)
hoja prueba lectura ¿Comprendes?
página cierto o falso contesta (contestar) completa (completar)
repasa (repasar) ¿preguntas? resumen vínculo
todo respuestas frases internet
toma (tomar) escribe (escribir) apuntes
***Toma nota…This is a TRADITIONAL lesson. You get the presentation once and can’t rewind. All you have to go with is your memory and whatever notes you write down. Tonight, you get the “flipped” lesson. Repeat as many times as necessary!

3. Old listening assessments. We’ve had three. Two were just on el abecedario/vocabulario and the other had different forms of diálogo. Let’s go over them.
4. Old writing assessment. We’ve had one. Let’s go over it.
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)
1. In our next class we will pause our continuation of “gustar” with affirmatives and negatives in order to have remediation assignments for Q1. The grades you receive on your remediation activities will AVERAGE with your existing grades if they help you . They will not be calculated into your grade if they would lower it. For example: If your average in Major is 55 and you score a 75 on the Major remediation assignment, your new MAJOR grade will average to 65.
2. I have provided information in the next lesson to help you prepare for the remediation.
Día 20…Martes 24.10 (A)

WE HAVE TODAY’S CLASS AND THE NEXT NEXT ONE TO MASTER THE 1A AND 1B CONCEPTS. AFTER THAT, YOU WILL HAVE SOME ASSESSMENTS…
1. HALLWAY CHAT…Simulated conversation (hallway) with “¿Qué te gusta hacer?” chat map. Students partner up. Practice all you’d like (or up to 10 minutes). Go back and forth. Make sure you’re both asking and answering questions. Add parts of the day (en la tarde, en la noche), seasons of the year (en el verano, en la primavera), places (en la escuela, en casa, etc.) to keep things fresh. After you’ve practiced, it’s time for you to simulate your conversation. Take a video of the two of you where I can see that you’re talking to each other. You may use the chat map but nothing else (NO WRITING) to simulate a 90 second (max 80%)-2 minute+ conversation (max 100%).
a. AFTER you record, share your video with your partner so that you each have access to a copy.
b. UPLOAD your video to Canvas.
2. (Last activity of class and let this carry over into homework)…Remember those amazing verb study sheets you all made for 1A with the .gifs? Let’s do something similar with the adjetivos. This is what I want…CREATE a document or spreadsheet (that I can read) with images from the internet. I want the following images with labeled descriptions:
a. 5 individual females (labeled singular)
b. 5 individual males (labeled singular)
c. 5 with mixed males/females (multiple people-labeled plural))
d. 5 only females (multiple people-labeled plural)
e. 5 SELFIES of you! The selfies can be just facial expressions or you acting something out. (labeled according to what is in the image)
What should the images depict? 25 DIFFERENT “¡ADJETIVOS!”. I’m also looking for singular/plural, masculine/femenino. FOR EACH adjetivo, you will receive 1-point. If you get all 25, that is worth a 95. One extra gets you to 100% for this GRADED ACTIVITY.
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)

We have a test on the 1A and 1B concepts. 1A: me gusta + infinitive, 1B: descripción de características…(That is a summary, there is more). The .pdf from class can help you as you begin to study. I also have an organizer titled “1B-8, 1B-9” that might help you with the more recent information. Finally, you have TWO documents you have created to help you study. The verbs sheet (.gifs) from 1A and the adjectives sheet from a few days ago.
Beyond your written notes, there are EIGHT videos you can watch with my recorded lectures to support you. Those videos can be found here: https://sites.google.com/site/spanishmaestrodavid/spanish-1?authuser=0 They are titled 1A (5 videos) and 1B (3 videos).

b. Números, clima, la fecha, etc.
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)
If you did not finish compiling the list in class, please take this time to review and organize your work. We have done a LOT this year. You need to see how much you have already learned! Organize your notes into two primary categories:

B-Hispanic Culture and comparison (similarities, differences, unique characteristics of Spanish language speakers and their communities)
Día 34 Lunes 11.12 (A)
1. BEFORE WE START THE LESSON, EVERYONE NEEDS TO SIGN UP FOR THE WORLD LANGUAGE DAY THAT WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEK…
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1QqQxLTgGzAvp2U_Ld858JhlBjC_oH-vLlZL0-fNp2Es/edit?usp=sharing
2. Before we start our next unit, let’s get organized with the knowledge we have obtained so far this year. Please look at “actividad 3” from the previous lesson or “tarea tarea tarea” from that lesson’s daily homework. Work in groups of 3-4 people to create a document that you can upload to Canvas. In that document, you should include every topic we have covered and include examples for each topic. The guide should be organized and include both language and culture. For example:
a. Concepto-El Cuerpo
i. Cabeza, pie, codo, etc.
b. Concepto-Abecedario
i. A=ahhh, B=beh, C=Se, etc.
c. Cultura-Adults
i. Sr.-is an adult male and is an acronym for Señor., etc.
*Note that “conceptos” are explained with mostly “Spanish” and “Cultura” is explained with mostly English.
3. HALLWAY SPEECH…Do you remember the chat you had in the hallway at the beginning of the month? Now, you’re going to make a speech based on EVERYTHING you’ve done up until this point in the year and you’re going to do it without any NOTES. By the 30th minute of our next class please upload your “presentational speaking activity” (Hallway Speech) to Canvas. Details below:
a. Review the guided notes/examples you’ve just uploaded. Focus on the nuts and bolts more than the culture since your speech needs to be in 100% Spanish.
b. Show me what you’ve learned. Just talk. You should start by greeting me and saying your name.
c. For example, “Hola Profe. Soy ________...Aprendimos mucho este año (We learned a lot this year). Por ejemplo, aprendimos las partes del cuerpo y los números. Tengo una cabeza y dos brazos…” Etc.
d. You may go OVER two minutes to get everything in. You should do a minimum of 2 minutes no matter what.

a. Check Canvas. I will not be accepting any late work beyond 05.01. This class and the next 48-hours are your last chance to turn in work that was previously due.
b. Check Powerschools. Any grade of sub-80, needs remediation. This means you need to look at the work and review your mistakes, so you don’t repeat them on future graded assignments. Do corrections. Study. As you do this, use ME as a resource. Ask any questions you need to in order to be sure you clearly understand a concept.

If you do better the second time around, I will update the grade. If you do not improve, I will leave things as they are.

a. tu sala de clases: la sala, el salón, la aula

4. TIME TO BUILD ON THESE BASICS! Spend the rest of the class period creating the most elaborate drawing of a classroom or home office/study area that you can think of. Put everything in there that you can think of and then label each item (#1-25). Make sure to include articles for all sustantivos (nouns) or you will lose points. TEN ITEMS you label can actually be describing position (preposiciones). AFTER you have done this, please take a photo of your labeled drawing (minimum 25 classroom objects) and upload it to CANVAS. This is for a grade. We will be using your drawings more soon (to practice preposiciones de ubicación).
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)
If you didn’t finish your drawing in class (25 labeled classroom-related vocabulary terms), please get this done and upload it to Canvas. At the start of our next class, it will be considered late and the highest grade you can get based on Enloe’s work policy is 50%.

The bottom line is that SER is used for idenfitying characteristcis, calendar stuff while ESTAR is used for situations and locations. ANY teacher that tells you anything about permanent vs. temporary should be ignored.

Note to self (2023-24). This lesson was originally much longer but it was reduced in order to help re-enforce basic verb conjugations of -ar, -er, and -ir verbs. Class spent a lot of extra time on the two textbook activities (-er verbs) and students did the worksheet as a practice test (labelling the part on the back both with nombres and vocabulario). It is a good time to do that as it is still early enough in 3rd quarter for those that want to pass to get the concept of conjugations down before the stretch run…
TAREA TAREA TAREA (complétala antes de comenzar la siguiente clase…La fecha se encuentra abajo…)
PREVIEW The lesson for día 58, so you are prepared to hit the ground running on your big Project.
MARTES 05.03 (A)
2023-24 NO HAY ESCUELA (elecciones)
Día 58…Jueves 07.03 (A)
Hola. I’m absent today. You will need to work together to complete today’s lesson, which begins a three-day assignment...
I want to be CLEAR about the opportunity this project offers you. It is such a huge dive into the culture that the grade will have a “special” weight to it. Even if you have been failing the class up until this point, if you do a good enough job on THIS project to earn 80% or higher, you have just provided me the documentation I need to pass you for 3rd quarter. If you can maintain that for the rest of the year, you will be able to pass Spanish 1! So, read the instructions carefully and look closely at the rubric. This is an opportunity for EVERYONE that has been struggling to turn things around.
I am assigning you a project that will focus on the cultural aspects of studying Spanish. Instead of experiencing pre-selected countries through a lottery, YOU get to choose destinations through a cooperative process! This project is only as worthwhile as you allow it to be. If you put in the effort, you will learn a lot and it might even help some of you understand what you need to do in order to travel internationally.
Please read over the following assignment. After you review the assignment, please choose your destination. I have supplied a list of places here. After you have read over the list, organize as a class. List the destinations on the board and organize your class-wide sign up in a way that assures only ONE person per class has that destination. If someone is absent, you will need to take that person into consideration and assign them a vacation destination as well. Leave the list on the board and take a picture of it (in case I have to erase it later). When you are considering your destination, remember that you can’t just take a “country” and go all over it. Imagine someone traveling to the US for vacation. That person can’t realistically go to NY, Chicago, and LA in the same week and get much more than jet lag out of the experience. You will want to be more regional to truly learn about the area and that is more realistic for a vacation as well.
