Presentational Spanish-Cultural Comparison

Presentational Speaking: Cultural Comparison

You will make an oral presentation on a specific topic to your class. You have 4 minutes to read the presentation topic and prepare your presentation. Then you will have 2 minutes to record your presentation.

In your presentation, compare your own community to an area of the Spanish-speaking world with which you are familiar. You should demonstrate your understanding of cultural features of the Spanish-speaking world. You should also organize your presentation clearly.

This one can be fun! You simply present a comparison of two communities, your community and a Spanish-speaking community, that addresses the question of the prompt.

Strategies to consider:

The question can be any theme or topic, but it is always general enough that it is not laser focused on any particular Spanish-speaking community. That means your previous knowledge will be the key to an effective presentation.

· Most experts consider the greatest challenge of the task is to recall pertinent specific information from your language study, so that you do not rely on general stereotypes and over generalization of the “mundo hispanohablante.”

· The first thing the AP Reader will do to determine the quality of the presentation is consider treatment of the topic and the effectiveness of the comparison.

o Select a target community to recall and outline specific information that demonstrates an understanding of the target culture.

· DO NOT use the majority of the two minute presentation to talk about your own community.

· Consider organizing your comparison in a “Ping-Pong” style. Back and forth is easy to follow. There are other strategies that could work as well.

· Speak at a natural pace and include inflection in your voice.

· Include clear transition words to move from point to point.

· Try to relay control in vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Correcting a mistake is better than moving on.

· There is no penalty for not giving a formal conclusion. Use every second to provide supporting details.

· You will score a 1 if you do not address the topic or compare your community to a Spanish-speaking community
