Interpersonal Speaking: Conversation
You Will participate in a conversation. First, you have 1 minute to read a preview of the conversation, including an outline of each turn in the conversation. Afterward, the conversation will begin, following the outline. Each time it is your turn to speak, you have 20 seconds to record your response.
You should participate in the conversation as fully and appropriately as possible.
This is both the easiest and hardest to prepare for. Conversation is easy. Timing your statements is hard and practice resources are not easy to access that fit the AP format.
Strategies to consider:
This is often a friendly conversation. You may be speaking to a friend in an informal format. Tú or Ud. are acceptable but make sure you are consistent.
· You are trying to portray an “authentic” conversation in the most “fake” context conceivable. After all, your conversation is actually OUTLINED!
· Take advantage of the outline. As you record your conversation, check off each part of it as you go to make sure you don’t lose your place.
· Make sure the conversation is cohesive. A cohesive conversation holds together and maintains the theme of the conversation.
· Responses are not scored individually. You are scored based on the WHOLE body of the conversation. Here is the AP Rubric.
· Be appropriate (informal or formal)
· Elaborate. Use your 20 seconds to respond each time. Don’t stop at 10 seconds.
· Stay comprehensible. Don’t speak too slowly or too fast. You have to sound like a “chill” teenager.
· If you make a mistake, correct yourself. That will be viewed more favorably than letting a mistake stand.
· Try to relay control in vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.
