Reading Strategies

Reading strategies are plans or methods to assist in reading proficiency.

These include methods that assist in understanding and graphic organizers, a visual that helps organize thoughts.

Concept Word map

supports vocabulary and concept learning by giving students a strategy for

defining and clarifying the meaning of unknown words.

Information about concepts can be organized according to three relationships:

• the general class or category in which the concept belongs

• the properties of the concept which distinguish it from other members of

the category

• examples or illustrations of the concept.

Cornell two-column note taking

As the student reads or listens, major headings or concepts are recorded in the space to the left, supporting details in the space to the right. Only one side of the paper is used. When it comes time to study, the paper is folded down the center line so that either the main ideas or the details are visible, but not both at once.

K-W-L: Know-Wonder-Learn

Abbreviated from Know-Want-Learn. An instructional strategy partially completed before the reading or teaching of a material, and partially afterwards. Students fill out two sections, "What I Know" and "What I Want to Know" beforehand, and then fill out "What I Learned" after the reading.

SQRRR/SQ3R: Survey, Question, Recite, Review

A study strategy designed to guide students in their comprehension of a reading. Students are instructed to survey the chapter headings, captions, and other information set apart from the main text, form questions based on the survey, read through the whole text, orally recite questions about the reading, and review the reading over the next few days. A variation called SQ4R adds reflect as a final step.
