ROJoson's Legacy as a Physician

I have been a practicing physician and surgeon since 1982 (official formal start) after I completed my general surgery residency program (1976 to 1981) at the Philippine General Hospital. That's 36 years as of November 2018.

I have been advocating and practicing as a holistic, professional, compassionate and cost-effective (value-based) physician-surgeon. This is clearly documented and supported in the following:

I have been advocating and development of a holistic, professional, compassionate and cost-effective (value-based) physician-surgeon in medical schools and surgical departments that I have taught and among medical students and surgical residents that I have interacted.

This is the legacy that I will and am leaving to my medical students, surgical residents, medical colleagues and most important of all, to my patients.

I have been an advocating and practicing as a 5-star or 6- to 7-star physician. In 2014, I was invited to give a talk to the University of the Philippines College of Medicine LU 3 students wherein I made a self-assessment: Am I an epitome of a 5-star physician? Details are seen in https://www.slideshare.net/rjoson/5star-physician-am-i-how-to-be

Holistic Physician

I advocate and practice this concept or framework of a holistic physician:

Professional Physician

I advocate and practice this concept or framework of a professional physician: accomplishing what is expected of the profession of a physician (or surgeon) - not only competency but to include excellence.

To maintain competency and excellence, I advocate and practice problem-based learning and self-directed learning.

Compassionate Physician

I advocate and practice this concept or framework of a compassionate physician: feeling and showing sympathy and concern for patients especially those in need of of one. All physicians are expected to be compassionate to patients. The deeper the sympathy to patients, the stronger is the desire to alleviate. The stronger the desire to alleviate, the greater and heavier the assistance to give. Ultimately, it is the assessment of the magnitude and weight of assistance given that determines the degree of compassion. The highest degree of compassion will consist of giving very extraordinary assistance, especially one that approximates the popular phrase of "blood, toils, tears and sweat" of Winston Churchill.

To be compassionate, however, a physician does not have to be always giving very extraordinary care. The compassionate care can be just extraordinary or ordinary. What is most important to remember is that any action of a physician that results from a sympathy of a patient's misfortune and which will assist or promte recovery of his health is compassionate care and the physician who give the compassionate care is a compassionate physician.

Examples of compassionate care projects that I have instituted are the Indigent Patient Help Program which I formally instituted in the Department of Surgery of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center which extends to other hospitals (Departments of Pediatrics of Zamboanga City Medical Center and Manila Doctors Hospital and Philippine General Hospital and the Project on Unnecessary Operations and Procedures.

Cost-effective (value-based) physician-surgeon

I advocate and practice this concept or framework of a cost-effective (value-based) physician: advising patients on the costs of diagnostic and treatment procedures and allowing them to decide and choose and with tendency to recommend the most cost effective ones (promoting value-based medical care - care with excellent results yet with the lowest possible costs). I use the Management of a Patient Process Framework to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making in cost-effective procedures.
