4th Asia-Pacific Problem-based Learning Conference in Health Sciences- An Accomplishment - A Legacy

When I was Chairman of the Department of Surgery of Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, I had the Department participate in the 4th Asia-Pacific Problem-based Learning Conference in Health Sciences from September 22 to 25, 2004.

Highlights of OMMC Surgery Participation

OMMC Surgery submitted and presented 17 education papers under several categories:

PBL; social accountability in health science education; clinical skills laboratory; distance education; innovative health professions education; curriculum development of evidence-based practice; health professions education; innovative educational technology; evaluation studies; and policy and program implementation.

All the 17 papers practically constituted the entire educational program of OMMC Surgery which was developed from 2001 to August, 2004.

There was a total of 52 abstracts for the free paper presentation published in the program.  OMMC Surgery’s 17 abstracts constituted 32%.

There was a total of 32 abstracts from the Philippines.  OMMC Surgery’s 17 abstracts constituted 53%.

Of the 17 OMMC Surgery’s papers, 5 were for poster presentation and 12, oral presentation.  There was a total of 9 papers in the poster presentation.  OMMC Surgery’s 5 poster presentation constituted 55%.

OMMC Surgery was the only postgraduate clinical department that presented education papers in the conference.

All surgical residents (15) and 5 core consultants participated in the conference.  For the oral presentation, 11 residents and 1 consultant presented.  For the poster presentation, 4 residents and 1 consultant presented.

This was an accomplishment that I will never forget.  This is a legacy that I leave behind for the Department of Surgery of Ospital Ng Maynila Medical Center, in surgical education, and in problem-based learning in health sciences.
