Many people, including patients and their family members, find it hard understanding leukemia and lymphoma. While both are known as types of cancers, they are not similar.
Both kinds of cancers affect the immune system. Leukemia refers to the abnormal production of white blood cells and is classified as a cancer of the bone marrow or blood. It usually comes from myeloid cells that are made in a person’s bone marrow. When the tumor cells are already affecting the blood being circulated throughout the body, it then becomes leukemia. Lymphoma, however, is a tumor of the lymph nodes. It occurs when abnormal cells are produced in one’s lymph nodes. It can build up in one’s spleen or bone marrow. When a patient has lymphoma, their lymph nodes expand in a way that is not normal.
