Advent I

Also known as: First Sunday of Advent

Advent I is the first Sunday in the liturgical calendar and the beginning of the Advent season.

The liturgical color is violet (or "purple").

One candle is lit in the Advent wreath in the chancel.  This is the violet candle directly opposite the rose candle.

The solemn mass (11:15am) begins with the Litany in procession.  The procession forms a series of figure eights in the nave.  At the petition "and provide for all women in childbirth" the procession continues into the chancel.

At the other masses, the sacred ministers pause at the Advent wreath during the processional hymn and recite the Prayer at the Advent Wreath as soon as the entrance hymn is concluded.  The other servers move to their regular places in the chancel pews.

The Advent Prose (DWM 151) may be sung in procession before the Introit or elsewhere in the mass.

The Gloria is omitted in Advent.

The Proper of the Mass is at DWM pg 152.

The celebrant, rather than the deacon, reads the Prayers of the People using Form I (See DWM 1048).   These prayers are omitted at the 11:15 mass if the Litany was sung at the beginning of mass.

The Preface is the Preface of Advent (DWM pg 582)
