Orate fratres

Also known as: Pray Brethren

An exhortation by the celebrant and a response by the people, during the Offertory, after the altar has been prepared for the Liturgy of the Eucharist and at the end of the Offertory Prayers and just before the Prayer Over the Offerings.

At the Orate Fratres, the torch bearers and thurifer should genuflect and then return to the vestry to prepare the torches.

The Priest kisses the altar and, turning toward the People, extending and then joining his hands, says aloud:

Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty.

The People stand and respond:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
