Celebrant

Also known as: Principal celebrant

A priest (or bishop or ordinary) who offers or leads the mass at the altar. Typically accompanied by a deacon and an acolyte.

There is only one celebrant for a mass. Concelebrants (concelebrating priests) join in the sacrifice of the mass at the altar, but do not lead it.

Priests in the chancel, but not at the altar, are not concelebrating but merely in choir.
