Consecration

Also known as: Qui Pridie

The point during the Liturgy of the Eucharist when the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

At the consecration, servers should be kneeling with heads bowed. After the words of consecration, when the celebrant elevates the Precious Body and Precious Blood, servers should raise their heads to adore the Blessed Sacrament and sign the cross.

At the final genuflection after the elevation of the chalice, the acolyte should rise with the celebrant.

In the formulas that follow, the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.
He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

WHO the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands,

He raises his eyes.

and with eyes lifted up to heaven, unto thee, God, his almighty father, giving thanks to thee, he blessed, broke and gave it to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT:

FOR THIS IS MY BODY,

WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

He genuflects, shows the consecrated Host to the People, places it on the pate, and again genuflects in adoration. Then he continues:

LIKEWISE, after supper,

He takes the chalice, and, raising it a little above the altar, continues:

taking also this goodly chalice into his holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks to thee, he blessed, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,

THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,

WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY

FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He genuflects, shows the Chalice to t he People, places it on the corporal, and again genuflects in adoration.
