Candlemas Form II: The Solemn Entrance
The table with candles is set just inside the entrance to the nave (with tapers ready for the lighting), along with the aspersorium and prayer booklet
The processional party lines up as usual for Mass in the narthex.
The Celebrant, moves forward to the table, says The Lord be with you and proceeds to (1) say the Prayer of Blessing over the candles, (2) impose incense, (3) sprinkle the candles on the table with holy water, (4) then cense them.
The candles are then lighted during the singing of Nunc dimittis, or Exsurge Domine or Ecce Dominus. The Celebrant lights a taper from one of the processional candles, and gives it to the Deacon and Acolyte, who light the candles for any Concelebrants and servers, and all ministers share the light with those around them. Ushers may assist in sharing the light by moving up the ambulatories through the church.
The MC and another server move to the sanctuary to light the altar candles and pavement lights, they may then stay in the chancel to await the altar party
The Entrance Procession then takes place, with the singing of the antiphons Adorna thalamum or Responsum accepit Simeon, or suitable hymn.
At the conclusion of the Solemn Entrance, the Celebrant removes the cope and vests in chasuble.
The Mass continues with the Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, and Collect, omitting the Invocation, Collect for Purity, and Summary of the Law.
The Acolyte reads the Epistle (intones at the Solemn Mass)
The congregations hand candles may remain lit through the Gospel.
Mass continues as usual, and concludes with the Last Gospel (for the last time of the season).
