Pyx

A small circular container used to hold a consecrated host.

Used by parishioners who need a special host for medical reasons. In this case, the pyx with an unconsecrated host is brought to the sacristy before mass and placed on the altar by one of the ministers so it will be consecrated with the other hosts. At the Communion of the Faithful the celebrant uses it to communicate the parishioner who provided it.

Also, use to deliver consecrated hosts to those who are not able to attend mass. In this case, the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion who is going to take it receives it directly into the pyx when receiving communion.
