Christmas mass in the night

Also known as: Midnight mass

The liturgical color is white (or gold)

The setting of the mass is Willan

The remains in the middle of the chancel.

The congregation receive taper candles before mass.

There is singing of Christmas carols before mass begins.

Note that the three Masses of Christmas have different Propers and different readings appointed in the Lectionary.

A Stational Prayer is said at the creche.

The Proper of the mass is at DWM pg. 186

Proclamation of the Birth of Christ is intoned by the deacon from the chancel step (or ambo), after the Kyrie and before the Gloria. (See DWM 1069).

All readings are intoned. The acolyte intones the Epistle, if possible..

Christmas form is used at the Communicantes (DWM pg. 638)

After the Communion of the faithful, lights are dimmed and the congregation’s taper candles are lit by candle bearers, followed by the singing of Silent Night.

The Last Gospel is said at the end of all masses (until Feb 2nd). The acolyte should stand up the framed copy of the Last Gospel, at the North end of the altar, during the dismissal. The celebrant reads the Last Gospel while the acolyte and deacon stand at the ends of the altar facing inward.. All servers stand for the Last Gospel, genuflecting at "and the Word was made Flesh"
