Crotalus

Also known as: Clacker

The crotalus is a wooden clapper that is used in place of bells during the Triduum when all bells are silenced, beginning after the Gloria at the Maundy Thursday mass, and lasting until the Gloria at the Holy Saturday Vigil mass of Easter.

The crotalus is "rung" by shaking it so as to make the clacker hit three times in rapid succession.
