Torch bearers

Also known as: Candle bearers, Torches

The servers who carry the processional candles and hold the communion torches during the Eucharistic Prayers.

Their duties may also include opening and closing the chancel gates and passing the alms basins to the ushers, if these are not covered by extra servers (ie mitre and crozier bearers).

Torch bearers are used whenever there is a Entrance Procession, which includes Sunday morning masses and the principal mass on solemnities.

The terms torch bearer and candle bearer are often used interchangeably. Technically the candle bearers are the servers carrying the processional candles and the torch bearers are the servers carrying the communion torches. At a typical mass, the same servers do both of these roles.
