Where I'm From Poem

Where I Am From

By M’onique Hutchinson

I am from God in Heaven, the seed of the earth,

the child of Joseph and Mary.

I am from COGIC

the Church of God in Christ.

I am from the backwoods of Kemper County,

Mississippi.

I am from a family who is close as

the blue sky.

I am from my parents of love, strength,

and understanding.

I am from a Soul Food dinner Sunday evening.

I am from the quietness of the air and

the singing of the birds.

I am from “I Have a Dream” speech by

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I am from the old spiritual Negro songs of

my ancestors of ‘Kunta Kinta.”

I am from the inner city neighborhood

to the upscale suburbs.

I am from the sisterhood of Zeta Phi Beta,

sisters of excellence.

Yes, that’s where I’m from!
