Photo Essay Assignment

On the topic assigned, new photographs must be taken - all photos must be taken with a digital camera. Take a series of five photos that tell a story - a different subject for each photo. Students will upload the project photos to Picasa, create a blog post on the Plainsman Blog, and embed the project photos. Excellent quality work is expected. Under each photo, make notes regarding:

  • WHO is in the photo
  • WHAT is happening that is not obvious in the photo
  • WHEN the photo was taken (what class period)
  • WHERE the photo was taken (which class and room)
  • WHY the activity you photographed was taking place
  • HOW the subject(s) were involved in the activity

*** Then, write a quality caption from the information in the who, what, when, where, why, how notes.

Be creative and have fun. Assignments must be posted to the blog before the beginning of the class they are due – No Lates!!!

Scoring for each photo is as follows:

1. Creativity: 25 points (Original idea. Full credit given to concepts where thought has been given to details. 5 points each photo)

2. Sharpness: 25 points (Subject is sharp and detailed. The Depth of Field is appropriate for that subject. 5 points each photo )

3. Arrangement: 25 points (Thought is given to the arrangement of both the subject and the lighting - Rule of Thirds is followed. 5 points each photo)

4. Photoshopping: 25 points (touchups including levels, etc. - 5 points each photo)

5. Notes: 25 points *required (5 points each photo)

6. Captions: 25 points *required (5 points each photo)

The Photo Essay is worth a total of 150 points.
