This adventure begins in La Jolla. Mike was a post-doc at UC San Diego and Kayla was finishing up grad school at UC Riverside. Sharing one automobile mandated that one of the two of us were on bicycle while the other had the automobile. We bought this bike on Craigslist for $200 and it has proven itself as a reliable commuter bike ever since.
One weekend to switch-off possession of the car, Kayla took a bike-on-train back to Riverside.
I boarded the coaster at Solana Beach. It is an Amtrak train running from downtown San Diego to Oceanside. Actually I had not bought the correct ticket but the conductor was kind enough to let me ride anyway. This was my very first bicycle adventure; there is always a learning curve.
Switching trains at Oceanside was a breeze (pun intended) and I even had time to lock up the bike, hit the restrooms, unlock the bike, and board the train.
I must have taken the Inland Empire - OC line back. Some of it had very pretty views as you can see (above). Not every line runs on the weekend. As you can see by my expression, I was not too happy about getting back to the lab. You can read more about my experiences in grad school here.
