I'm a little foggy if this is the route we took but the thing I remember most about this hike is that right when we were about to get back to the car, around sunset, my dog Melle took off running after a deer. We told the park rangers that we had a missing dog, after we had waited 45 minutes at the car for her to return. I cried as we drove away without her. The park ranger didn't even take down our information because NO lost dogs had ever been recovered from the park. Nonetheless, I called the next day and a more compassionate ranger took down my information. That afternoon, around 2 pm, I got a phone call saying "we found your dog at the parking lot where you said she would be." The first guy, who lived on-site in a trailer, apologized for his rudeness and explained that he had been working there for over a decade and had not once recovered a lost dog. He told me that my Mel must be one special lady-dog.
