Usually, we would park at the Saguaro Day Use Area and cross the park boundary fence before taking Jacob's Crosscut Trail to the Siphon Draw Trail. Our goal would be to climb the Basin to reach The Flatiron. I think one time we might have taken trail #56 to Green Boulder, but it wasn't as exciting. The Basin/Flatiron offers spectacular views of the Valley of the Sun. If you make it... the end presents a challenge which I usually tackled on all fours since it is pretty much a wall of rock.
I tried to map this hike on mapmyride, but satellite was unavailable. This may give you an idea of how remote this hike is. Despite this, there were a couple women who decided that my dog was being mistreated and decided to CARRY her back to the parking lot. Melle has caused more than a few debacles in all the hikes we took together, but I don't blame her.
Luckily, I saved the handout that the park put together (see file below). There are a couple pictures (from my scrapbook) that also are included in the scanned image. Enjoy Apache Junction!
