At South Elgin High School, the girls kicked off their IHSA post-season run with a fantastic day of competition Friday. Freshman Ashley Kosy cruised through her first two matches, dropping only one game as she knocked off Elgin Academy and St. Ed's first singles players to punch her ticket to state. After both qualifying for singles last season, the first doubles team of Alina Zabolotico and Megan Elliott earned a berth in the state doubles tournament with a pair of lopsided wins of their own. In the match of the tournament so far, Jen Regard and Miranda Curtis took the court with Elgin Academy's top team just after 6:30pm. Under the lights, the Jacobs pair played inspired tennis. Controlling the action from all areas of the court, Jen and Miranda won 6-3, 6-1 to earn their first trip to the state tournament.
Just as impressive as the girls' play was the great sportsmanship they continued to show. During Jen and Miranda's qualifying match, the Elgin Academy coach made a point of stopping over to let me know just how impressed he was with the way our players carry themselves on court and that, in all his years coaching, he had never once seen our players act in poor character. I couldn't have been more proud of our team. Way to go girls!
