Illustrations & Photographs

These are arranged in approximate chronological order :

Right : A view, in Indian ink of the village of Southwell on Portland Island: drawn by Heironymus Grimm in August 1790

(Source : Add MS 15,537 No 184 British Library)

One windmill can just be seen in the distance (poor photocopy !)

Left : Windmill c 1868 from the future Park Road [DR0444]

The mills were almost certainly still working at this date.

Sketch by local artist William Pye of the North Mill c1890's

It is presumed made when mill was still working

Above : An enlarged extract of the earliest photograph c 1890 of North Mill with horse drawn plough in the foreground. Photographer is unknown. This appears in several books by Portland Historian Stuart Morris. It was probably taken shortly after the mill ceased to work as the sailbars are starting to rot and decay.

Above : A photograph c1908 (given to RC by Mr Peter Trim in 1990). It shows the North windmill with its cap roof now missing giving an intriguing view of the neck bearing and main compass arm wheel. This photograph also appeared in the Portland Year book of the same period.

North Mill - c1934 (Weymouth Library Ref L942.332)

Above : Another pen and ink drawing dated July 1934 of the North Mill by K A Wood.

The towers appear to be a little slender !

Left : A delightful, if rather crude, little Indian ink sketch by D.W. Doll (Professor Doll ?) (found in a North Wales antique shop ! by Mr Robert Stone)

Judging by the condition of the mills the sketch would appear to date from the late 1930's

Above - RCHM photograph of 1961 of North mill tower.

Above RCHM photographs of 1961 of the south mill tower

Left : RCHM photo of 1961 of south windmill. Interestingly, it shows an upper, partially blocked up, "doorway" .

This may have been in connection with the tower being made a lookout post during WW2. A concrete floor was inserted about 2.5m from ground level - the corrugated galvanised shutter for this still exists (2019).

The photo above (RC 1991) shows the upper side of this concrete floor.
