Easton North Windmill , Portland, Dorset

(sketch by local artist Will Pye c1890)

Above : This windmill (fully restored & working in the late 1980's) in a small French village in the Cotes-d'Armor department of northern Brittany first kindled my interest in windmills

Above : The county of Dorset is on the south coast of England

There are general pages on Dorset Windmills and also a gazetteer that expands out to give information on all historic sites located to date.

The windmills at Easton on the Isle of Portland whose stone towers still survive have their own section.

All transcriptions on this site are intended for use in personal and private research only.

If you wish to use or reproduce my research, I would ask that you have the basic courtesy to contact me and acknowledge the source in any publication or article. Many people have have done so in the past. I am a great believer in making research freely available for everyone and do not like the practice of claiming copyright for the use of this or any primary or secondary sources.

However, not everyone has this ethos - there is a website on Portland that has used my research on the Portland mills and a published booklet "Poole Mills" * that has done so for the Poole windmills. I emailed both of these so called researchers but have had no reply from either of these (Dec 2023) - why I am not surprised !

* this author has even claimed copyright of his book's material !
