Medical Gases Certification

NEXT COURSE: Saturday 7th May 2011 BONUS: Includes Epi-Pen Training!

OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION

It is essential that the body receives a constant supply of oxygen to live and function. If this becomes compromised the body tries to do what it can to survive but it is essential that the brain and vital organs receive oxygen. Sometimes people need additional oxygen if they are unwell or injured.

Oxygen (O2) is a colourless, odourless gas and a part of the atmosphere we breath. Sometimes we need higher concentrations of oxygen to recover or maintain homoeostasis (as steady healthy optimum internal environment maintained for health).

This course teaches how to recognise when a person needs additional oxygen and how to administer it appropriately, and also when it would be inappropriate to give oxygen / contraindications.

This course covers the use of Oxygen as a medical intervention and is aimed at personnel who are required to give Oxygen as part of treatment. Additional oxygen can increase survival chances for those who are severely ill or injured, drowning or those who are undergoing CPR. Some workplace risk assessments may indicate that their staff need Oxygen training.

People may need Oxygen as a part of their treatment or medical response such as resuscitation from drowning, cyanide poisoning, major trauma, anaphylaxis, major haemorrhage, shock, active convulsions and hypothermia. It may also be indicated for any other patient where their injury or illness has caused hypoxaemia, although in this case oxygen flow should be moderated to achieve target oxygen saturation levels, based on pulse oximetry. This will be covered as part of the course.

ENTONOX ADMINISTRATION

Entonox (N2O+O2) is an analgesic gas made up of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen. It is widely used within the Medical Community pain relief for ill or injured people.

When used correctly and given time to work (two minutes). It can help patients pain or discomfort and allows then to be handled and transported with a minimum of stress. Entonox is suitable for use with patients who are suffering from heart conditions and experiencing chest pains.

The course will enable successful students to offer Entonox as part of their medical treatment of injuries or illness.
