Many people who suffer from serious allergic response to certain substances, often commonly occurring substances, may carry some thing with them called 'an Epi-Pen'. This is because they may suffer a serious life threatening compromise if the come into contact with these substances - which may be as commonly present as Peanuts or Bee Stings and the may suffer Anaphylactic Shock as a result.

Anaphylactic Shock (also called allergic shock) is a life threatening emergency requiring immediate attention and someone in Anaphylactic Shock needs Adrenaline. An Epi-Pen is a pen like device which uses an 'auto-injector' to rapidly injects or deliver someone with Adrenaline.

In the United Kingdom, Adrenaline is a Prescription Only Medication (POM), however during life threatening emergencies Adrenaline can be given by a lay person as per Schedule 7 of The Prescription Only Medicines (Human Use) Order 1997 (SI1997/1830) and it's amendments.
