For years I wondered who the mysterious Mr. Lundwill, my Great Great Grandfather, was. In May of 2014 I attended the Calgary Family History Fair and a workshop entitled Decoding Foreign Records Using the Wiki inspired me to try looking for Danish Records. I knew that the family was from Haarby, Denmark so I began by learning about Haarby. I found out that Haarby is on Funen Island and that Haarby is located in Hårby Sogn (Parish); Båg Herred (District), Odense Amt (County). Luckily for me in 1645 King Christian IV of Denmark decreed that ministers keep records of all births, marriages, and deaths; these records have since digitized and can easily be found on the site: http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/. I knew my Great Grandmother Millie was born on April 13, 1894 so I searched the church records and found her birth record. This revealed that Mr. Lundwill was in fact Olaf August Lundvald. Yes, Lundvald not Lundwill. It is unknown why the name got changed when the family came to America. From there it was easy to find more details for the Lundvald family in Denmark as almost all their life events (births, deaths, and marriages) occurred in Odense County (click link for map). With the help of some very kind people in the Facebook group Genealogisk forum I was able to trace the line back to Sweden. Here is some of my speculation on how the surname Lundvald came about: In Skåne, Sweden (where my 4x Great Grandfather was born) there is a city named Lund and I have found vald means elected or chosen; right now it means absolutely nothing but maybe some day I will find that my guess is completely wrong or maybe it has some truth to it. Note: When I created this page I did not add reference numbers but for new content I am using them and slowly adding them to old content as well, most sources for the older content are listed below with no references yet.
