Mellott Branch

Introduction

This page is about my Mellott ancestors and their family which starts with my Grandfather Dale Leroy Mellott.  It has been an interesting journey to find out about my grandfather's family and I am happy to share it with you.

My 3x Great Grandparents - John Mellott & Elizabeth Smith

John Mellott (son of John Andrew Mellott) was born on August 13, 1829 in Pennsylvania, USA.

John married Elizabeth Smith in about 1850.  Elizabeth Smith (daughter of Charles G Smith & Rebecca Chenoweth) was born on April 30, 1833C01 in Clark, Ohio, USA.

After John's father died Charles McLaughlin was appointed as his guardian in 1846.148,

Elizabeth (age 17) is listed in the 1850 US Census as living in Harmony, Clark, Ohio with her family: Charles G Smith (age 48), Rebecca (age 40), Margaret (age 14), Mauda J (age 11), Sarah (age 8), Nancy (age 6), and Angelina (age 2).046

John Melott and Elizabeth Smith were married on March 25, 1852 in Clark, Ohio, USA.140

John (age 29) and Elizabeth (age 27) are listed in the 1860 US Census as living in Liberty, Warren, Indiana with their family: Sarah A (age 7), Charles S (age 5), Eliza E (age 4) and Elmore C (age 1); John's occupation is listed as a farmer and the value of his personal estate is listed as $300.040  John's twin brother William (age 29) and his wife Nancy E (age 24) is listed on the same page of the 1860 US Census; William's occupation is listed as a farmer and the value of his personal estate is listed as $500; William also has a Farm Laborer named Darwin Rowland living with him.040  My transcription of this record is included on the Charles Mellott Mystery Solved sub-page.

The Chenoweth Family Site lists Elizabeth's death as 1862.C02

John Mellott married Mary Gobat on October 25, 1866 in Warren, Indiana their marriage announcement appeared in the Warren Republican on November 15, 1866 and listed their residence as Williamsport, Indiana.114,115

On June 27, 1867 an article regarding "Clayton Malott, a little boy about six years old" was published in the Warren Republican.  The article mentions "his brother, a boy a few years older" so this is likely Charles.  The article says "His only complaint to his mother was that he was sick and wanted to go to bed"; this is likely his step-mother Mary.116

Mary left John and on January 28, 1869 John placed a notice in the Warren Republican stating: "Notice is hereby given that my wife Mery Mallott, has left my bed and board without any just cause or provocation.  I warn all persons from trusting or harboring her on my account as I will pay no debts of her contracting."117

On February 23, 1869 Mary gave birth to Louis Carson Mellott.

John's Children: Alice (age 17)098, Charles (age 16)088, Ella (age 13)099, Clayton (age 11)089, and William (age 9)095 were enumerated in the 1870 US Census as living with other family members except for Louis (age 1) who was living with his mother Mary (age 37) and half sister Rosella (age 8).137

John died possibly died between 1869-1872?

According to a letter from Guy Mellott written in 1938: John "is buried in a cemetry just north of Veedersburg, the name if the cemetery is Union.  There is a church there also, there  is a stone at his grave, he died at my Grandfather's home."L02  (Note: Guy's Grandfather is John's brother George W Mellott)

Mary (age 49 - widow) and Lewis (age 11) are listed in the 1880 Census as inhabitants of Washington Township, in the County of Warren, State of Indiana.138

My 4x Great Grandparents - John Andrew Mellott & Eve Sipes

John Andrew Mellott was born in about 1787.064,079

Eve was born unknown.

John married Eve Sipes about 1803 in Pennsylvania.106

Eve died unknown.

John married Harriet142 unknown.

John is listed as a taxable inhabitants of Licking Creek Township in 1838.081

John died "intestate"142 (without a will)D01 on June 27, 1839,064 "leaving a widow to wit Harriet Mellott, and twelve children, to wit".142

The probate for John's estate was filed on November 27, 1840.  One of the documents in John's estate was "An Inventory of the Goods and Chattles of John Mellott, late of Bedford County deceased appraised by us the subscribers, this 6th day of July 1839"; and listed is a note for Abraham Correll for $15 c00.091

John's probate was completed in January of 1841 with a "balance of four hundred + fifty five dollars + ninety six cents".080

On March 18, 1843 the Orphans Court lists John's minor children as: "John, William, Abraham, Susanna + James Melott" and that they are "to appear at an Orphans Court to be held in Bedford for the County of Bedford on the third Monday 17th day of April next and choose guardians upon whom a notice may be served of the proceedings to obtain a writ of Partition" "upon the estate of their late father, application will be made by Abraham Correll who is intermarried with Charlotte one of the heirs and lived descendants of said deceased".128

Probate Summary:142,144,145  John Mellott died intestate (without a will); he left a widow, Harriet, and twelve children: 6 adults (Gideon, George, Andrew, Charolotte [married to Abraham Correll], Ida [married to Adam Mellott] and Jacob), 3 minors over 14 years of age (William, John and James) and 3 minors under the age of 14 (Abraham, Susanna and Washington). Five of the minor children were appointed guardians (Charles McLaughlin for John148,, Andrew Fisher for James151,, and David Mann Jr for: William, Abraham and Susanna149&150) the sixth Washington Mellott was not, this leads me to believe that Harriet was his mother.X03 Harriet remarried while the probate was being carried out in 1846 or 1847 and is referred to as Harriett Grey in the later documents. John had 186 acres of land which was to be divided in to 12 equals parts and that Harriet would get 1/3 of the whole as her dower but it was determined that the split would spoil the whole so the land was sold to David Mann Jr for Four Dollars and sixty nine + three fourth cents per acre totaling the sum of Eight hundred + seventy three Dollars + seventy three cents.

I have found unsourced information that Eve Sipes is the daughter of Margaret Mellott and George Sipes.S01  The will of Margaret's father Obediah says the following: "And it is my will that my Executors pay unto George Sipes, my grand son the son of my daughter Margaret Sipes the sum of four dollars when he should arrive at the age of twenty one years."082 It does not mention Eve so other documentation will need to be found.

John was also married or had a child with a Louise Brant before he married Eve; there son Andrew was born unknown but was the oldest male child of Johns according to his father Jacob's will.   John's father Jacob's last will and testament drafted in 1844 includes the following as John died before him: "my son John's Andrew is to have and hold it as long as he liveth and then to his eldest male so on as alive mentioned  I also give a bequeath my son Johns children each and every one of them one dollar fifty cents to be paid to them when the youngest one one becomes of age".096
