IBAH ЯКОВИШИН aka Ivan or John Yakoweshen was born January 31, 18691,2,7 in Nove Mamietz (Mamayevtsi), Chernivtsy Oblast, Bukovnia, Austria (now Ukraine).2 Maria or Mary Kucherowsky or Kuchorevsa was born 18741 or 18762,7 in Chernivtsy Oblast, Bukovnia, Austria (now Ukraine).2 Together John and Mary had 10 children; the first three were born in Austria (now Ukraine) and the rest born in Canada after they immigrated in 1903.6 It took the family 3 weeks to cross the Atlantic then "they finally landed in Halifax and from there took a train west to Edmonton."3,a John settled on a homestead in Wostok, Alberta at SE 10-56-17-W4 in 1905.4 "Under the provisions of the Federal Dominion Lands Act (1872), individuals could make application for parcels of Crown land in Western Canada. The normal size of a homestead was one quarter section of 160 acres. Upon taking up the homestead, the individual was required to clear at least 10 acres of land, undertake some cultivation, have built a habitable dwelling and some farm buildings, and live on the land for six months a year for three years. Once these requirements were let, the individual would submit an application for title (letters patent) to the land."5 On September 25, 1909 John submitted his application for Homestead Patent;4 and in December 1909 that patent was granted.4

The Yakoweshen family was enumerated in the 1906 Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta at 10-56-17-W4 as: John (age 40), Maria (age 36), Pawel (age 9), Basil (age 6), Zinsia (age 5), Nicholas (age 2) and Domka (age 1); they had 2 Other horned or neat cattle and 1 Hogs and pigs.6,A
The Yakoweshen family was enumerated in the 1911 Census of Canada at 10-56-17-W4 as: John (born 1869), Maria (born 1876), Powlo (born 1897), Wasyl (born 1900), Zanovia (born 1902), Nickoli (born 1904), Domka (born 1906), Georgie (born 1908) and Stephen (born 1910). It shows that John has naturalized but cannot make out the date.7,B,b
The Yakoweshen family cannot be found in the 1916 Census8,C,D
"One quarter if land couldn't provide for them all so, in 1919, the homestead was sold to a neighbor and the family bought a quarter of land two miles north of their original home from a local farmer and two additional quarters of CPR land adjacent to this quarter. The elder sons, Paul and Bill, were given a farm each. The original house, barn and granary were moved from the homestead to the new quarter by steam tractor. The buildings were all made of logs, hewn by hand and mud-plastered on both sides."3
The Yakoweshen family was enumerated in the 1921 Census of Canada at 14-56-17-W4 as: John (age 52), Mary (age 45), Paul (age 24), Wasel (age 21), Nikolay (age 17), Domka (age 15), George (age 13), Steven (age 10), Helen (age 8), Elias (age 5) and Mary (age 2).9,E

The Yakoweshen family was enumerated in the 1926 Census of Canada at Section NW14, Township 56, Range 17, Meridian 4 in Wostok as "Jakowyszyn": Iwan (age 58), Maria (age 50), Nykloaj (age 22), George (age 18), Stefan (age 15), Helen (age 13).G2-1926-CEN
John died on March 3, 1934,1,10 and Mary died on May 22, 1955;1,10,G2-1955-AD,G2-1955-OBIT they are buried in St Nicholas Orthodox Cemetery, Wostok, Alberta.1

George was born in 190814. He married Maria Katan in about 194116; Marie was born in 191614. Marie died June 21, 199816 and George on January 5, 200015; they are buried in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Edmonton, Alberta14,15,16.
