Introduction

My Great-Grandmother was Melinda Schaub; she was born March 11, 1898 in Leelanau, Michigan.^R001 My grandmother Yvonne said the following about Melinda in a 1999 interview:^I001

“She loved gardening, they had huge gardens, strawberries, raspberries, bushels of cucumbers and tomatoes. Raised chickens, turkey, and geese. We never suffered for lack of food. They also had cows, pigs and horses. My mother also spun her own wool and knit by the hour in the evening. Socks, mitts and scarves. She was always busy. Always had a friendly smile for everyone. Too soon she was taken from us so early in life. God Bless you Mom.”

Jacob John Schaub

Jacob Schaub was born December 30, 1868 in Centerville, Leelanau, Michigan.^R002 Jacob's parents were John Schaub and Elizabeth Gauthier.

Jacob Shaub (age 1) and his family: John (age 22 - Farmer) and Eliza (age 20) are listed in the 1870 US Census as living in Centreville Township, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R003

Jacob J Schaub (age 11) and his family: John A (age 31 - Farmer), Elizabeth (age 31), Matilda (age 10), Christina (age 8), Barbara (age 6), Mark (age 4), and Icidas (age 1) are listed in the 1880 US Census as living in Bingham, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R004

Jacob J Schaub (age 25 - Bachelor) is listed in the 1894 Michigan State Census as living in Leland Township, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R005

Pauline Mary Plamondon

Mary Apoline Plomodon was born November 10, 1876 in Bingham, Leelanau, Michigan.^R006 Pauline's parents were Simon Plamondon and Marguerite Chouinard. More information her parents and siblings can be found on the Plamondon Branch.

Pauline Plumondon (age 4) and her family: Simeon (age 32 - Farmer), Margurite (age 29), Narcisse (age 6), Mary (age 2), Alexander (age 1) and Godsgiven (age 1 month) were enumerated in the 1880 US Census at Leland, Leelanau, Michigan.^R007

Pollon Plamondon (age 17) and her family: Margret (age 43 - Widow), Nelson (age 20), Mary (age 16), Elexander (age 15), Raymond (age 12), Malinda (age 9), August (age 8), Odelia (age 5), Domatal (age 4), and Henry (age 3) were enumerated in the 1894 Michigan State Census at Leland, Leelanau, Michigan, United States.^R008

Jacob & Pauline Schaub

On April 18, 1895 the following was published in the Leelanau Enterprise: "Marriage licenses issued from the County Clerk's office since our last report is as follows: Jacob J. Schaub of Provemont and Polly Plomondon, same place.".^R026

A small write-up including a picture of Pauline and Jacob can be found on pages 713 and 714 of Plamondon: From Spruce Trees to Wheatfields history book.^H001-713 In the book it says Jacob and Pauline: "lived on a small farm were they had an orchard and they also raised vegetables which they sold to help make a living."^H001-713

Jacob J (age 31 - Farmer) and Pauline (age 23) Schaub and their family: Maggie (age 4), Alexander (age 3) and Melinda (age 2) were enumerated in the 1900 US Census at Leland, Leelanau, Michigan; a boarder (Jacob's brother) Mark Schaub (age 23) is also listed. For Pauline it says she was mother of 5 but only 3 were living; for Jacob it says he owned his home but with a mortgage.^R011

Jacob (age 41 - Farmer) and Pauline P (age 33) Schaub and their family: Maggie (age 14), Alex (age 13), Malinda (age 12), Catherine (age 9), Oscar (age 8), Isabell (age 7) Jennie (age 5), Caroline (age 3), Leo (age 1 2/12) and Thomas (age 0/12) were enumerated in the 1910 US Census at Leland, Leelanau, Michigan,. For Pauline it says she was mother of 12 but only 10 were living; for Jacob it says he owned his home but with a mortgage.^R012

In The Descendants of Jacob John Schaub it says that "Jacob, besides farming worked as a steam engineer, but as his family grew in size, he realized that his sons, when ready to go on their own, would be unable to find land on which they could settle. He therefore decided to join the migration north to Plamondon, Alberta".^H003

In Plamondon: From Spruce Trees to Wheatfields it says that in 1913 the Schaub family: "moved west to Plamondon, Alberta with their family of ten children. When they arrived, they were greeted by friends and relatives. Baptist Plamondon let them use his house for the winter. In the spring, they took a homestead east of Plamondon."^H001-713

On November 29, 1913 in Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada Jacob John Schaub of Plamondonville filed for a homestead on the Southwest Quarter of Section number 24 in Township 67, Range 16, W of the 4th Meridian.^R013

Jacob (age 47 - Engineer) and Pauline (age 40) Schaub and their family: Margaret (age 20), Alex (age 19), Melinda (age 18), Catherine (age 16), Oscar (age 15), Jennie (age 13), Caroline (age 10), Leo (age 8), Thomas (age 6), Martin (age 4), Bertha (age 2), and Mary (age 1) were enumerated in the 1916 Census of Canada at Plamondon: Canton 67 Range 16 Meridian W4M.^R014

Jacob (age 52 - Farmer) and Pauline (age 44) Schaub and their family: Alex (age 25), Oscar (age 19), Leo (age 13), Thomas (age 11), Martin (age 9), Johnny (age 3), Philip (age 1), Joanna (age 16), Caroline (age 14), Bertha (age 6), and Mary (age 5) were enumerated in the 1921 Census of Canada at Plamondon: Canton 67 Range 16 Meridian W4M; under year of naturalization it says "application".^R015

On November 21, 1921 Jacob John Schaub of U.S.A. and his minor sons: Leon, Martin, Oscar and Thomas became naturalized citizens of Canada.^R016 Up until 1929 women in Canada were not considered "persons" under the British North America Act^H002 and therefore Pauline and her daughters were not listed as naturalized.

In a letter dated April 10, 1922 Jacob John Schaub was informed that a patent for that land "less land covered by waters of Lake no. 1, at time of survey of said lake" was issued in his name on February 13, 1922.^R013

Jake (age 57), and Pauline (age 49) and their family: Oscar (age 24), Leo (age 17), Thomas (age 16), Martin (age 13), Bertha (age 11), Mary (age 9), John (age 8), Philip (age 6) and Anna (age 2) were enumerated in the 1926 Census of Canada.^R044

In 1935, Jacob Schaub, farmer, and Mrs. Jacob Schaub, married woman, are on the list of electors for rural polling division no. 170, Plamondon.^R017

In 1945, Pauline Schaub, farmer, is on the list of electors for rural polling division no. 135, Plamondon.^R018

In Plamondon: From Spruce Trees to Wheatfields it says that after Jacob's passing Pauline: "carried on with the farm with the help of the boys, until she retired in 1947."^H001-713

In 1949, Mrs Pauline Schaub, pensioner, is on the list of electors for rural polling division no. 136, Plamondon.^R019

Pauline Schaub passed on January 5, 1957.^H001-713

In The Descendants of Jacob John Schaub it says that Jacob and Pauline are buried in Plamondon Community Cemetery,^H003 but during a 2015 visit I did not find any markers with their names.

John (age 22 - Farmer) and Eliza Shaub (age 20) and their son Jacob (age 1) were enumerated in the 1870 US Census as living in Centreville Township, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R003

John A (age 31 - Farmer) and Elizabeth (age 31) Schaub and their family: Jacob J (age 11), Matilda (age 10), Christina (age 8), Barbara (age 6), Mark (age 4), and Icidas (age 1) are listed in the 1880 US Census as living in Bingham, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R004

On December 10, 1880 John A Schaub was issued Homestead Certificate No 4284, Application 6759 "the claim of John A. Schaub has been established and duly consummated in conformity to the law for the South fractional half of the north-west fractional of section seven, in township twenty-nine north of range eleven west of the Michigan Meridian containing sixty-eight acres and thirty-six hundredths of an acre." "Now know ye, That there is therefore granted by the United Stats, unto the said John A. Schaub the tract of Land above described: TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said tract of Land, with the appurtenances thereof, unto the said John A. Schaub and to his heirs and assigns forever.".^R031

On June 26, 1890 a "Notice of Mortgage Sale" was published in the Leelanau Enterprise: "Default having been made in the conditions of a certain mortgage made by J. A. Schaub and Elizabeth Schaub to The Hannah & Lay Mercantile Company" "there is claimed to be due at the date o this notice the sum of two hundred fifteen dollars and thirty cents" "notice is hereby given that in Saturday the 2nd day of August, eighteen hundred and ninety, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, I shall sell at Public Auction, to the highest bidder" "the premise described in said mortgage, or so much thereof as may be necessary to play the amount due on said mortgage, with eight percent interest, and all legal costs: the premises being described in said mortgage as follows to-wit: The south half of the north-west quarter of section seven in township twenty twenty-nine north of range eleven west in Leelanau County, Michigan".^R028 I was not sure what this meant as I had records of the Schaub family living on that same property past the date in the notice so I contacted a genealogical blogger, Judy G. Russel with my question "What was sold to pay the mortgage?" . She was able to do a little digging and posted about it on her blog The Legal Genealogist in summary Judy answered that nothing was sold "Or, at any rate, not the land" and that "it certainly appears, the Schaubs paid up"; to read the full blog post please visit this link: Going once, going twice.^LG On February 4 & March 18, 1897 more notices were published in the Leelanau Enterprise.^R029,R030

John A (age 46) and Elizabeth (age 40 - mother of 13; 11 living) and their family: Christine (age 21 - mother of 1; 1 living), Barbara (age 19), Mark (age 17), Isadore (age 15), Edmund (age 13), Margaret (age 11), Rudolph (age 9), Richard (age 6), Agnes (age 2) and Edward (age 1 - grandson) were enumerated in the 1894 Michigan State Census as living in Bingham Township, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R036

John A (age 51) and Elisabeth (age 54 - mother of 13; 11 living) Schaub and their family: Edmund (age 19), Margaret (age 16), Rudolf (age 14), Richard (age 10) and Agnes (age 9) were enumerated in the 1900 Census as living in Bingham Township, Leelanau County, Michigan.^R037

Elizabeth Schaub died on August 28, 1907^R034 and was buried in St Marys Cemetery.^R034,R035

John A Schaub (age 61) was enumerated in the 1910 Census as living in Silver, Lake, Oregon; his son Richard F (age 21) was enumerated on the next line of the same page.^R042

John A Schaub (age 71) was enumerated in the 1920 Census as living in Fort Rock, Lake, Oregon; his son Richard F (age 31) was enumerated on the next line of the same page.^R043

John Schaub (age 82) was enumerated in the 1930 Census as living in Leland, Leelanau, Michigan, USA with his son Mark Schaub.^R039

On March 8, 1894 the following was published in the Leelanau Enterprise: "John Schaub informes us that his father Jacob Schaub of Provemont, at this writing is very ill.".^R027
