This is the wiring used by Danelectro and the Fender Duo Sonic. In both guitars, a "on-off-on" type 3 way switch is used. The effect is the same as the two SPST switches in the examples above.
Series wiring is also how traditional humbuckers are wired. The diagram on the left is typical of the type of switch that turns a humbucker into a single coil. The connection to ground is somewhat intuitive. The diagram on the right would produce similar results, but is much less commonly seen since it is a harder concept to grasp for the average guitar tech. The idea of shorting the "hot" coil seems counter intuitive at first, but it works.
