Millions of families in the U.S. are living with a loved one who’s both a senior and a person struggling with a form of dementia. The harsh reality of it is that as people age, they become more prone to degenerative mental diseases, with dementia being one of the most common. As dementia progresses, it develops into full-blown diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

However, Dr. Curtis Cripe mentions that there are ways to make the lives of seniors with dementia more comfortable. These methods vary from keeping their minds busy to allow them ample time to discover and rediscover the world around them to affording them fun times with the family.

Dr. Curtis Cripe believes that it’s very important for families of seniors with dementia to keep their loved ones as mentally and physically active as possible. Families can introduce them to new hobbies such as arts and crafts or even brisk walking in the morning. Doing so keeps their brains and bodies functioning well, which may also slow the development of the neurological disease.

When families take their grandfathers and grandmothers out on trips, the seniors can discover and rediscover the world. And since the human brain can change because of a quality called neuroplasticity, which makes it adjust to new things and experiences.

Dr. Curtis Cripe heads research and development at the NTL Group. He has published two peer-reviewed papers and written two book chapters on neurotherapy and neuroengineering. Visit this blog for more posts and updates related to neurology.
