One can have a traumatic head injury or TBI if they experience a sudden blow, bump, or jolt to the head, or if something penetrates the brain, like a bullet from a gunshot wound. TBI is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention, as it means damage to the brain. If not dealt with quickly, TBI can result in disability or even death.

Causes of TBI include injuries related to sports, road accidents, falling, and physical aggression. It happens when a violent hit to the head causes the brain to collide with the inner part of the skull, causing brain-bruising, internal bleeding, or tear in the nerve fibers. Sometimes a splinter from the skull may even penetrate the tissues of the brain.

In milder cases, one will have a headache or feel a temporary confusion. But if the resulting concussion is more severe, TBI can lead to unconsciousness, amnesia, coma, long-term impairment, and fatality. The severity of the symptom depends on which specific part of the brain is affected and how extensive the damage the trauma has caused.
