Over five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number is growing rapidly. There is a projection that in a few decades, a person in the United States will be afflicted every 33 seconds. As of now, around 35 percent of senior citizens who pass away do so with Alzheimer’s. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the country. Over 12 percent of people 65 years or older are suffering from Alzheimer’s. The projected number of Americans with Alzheimer’s will be a staggering 13.8 million by 2050.

Because of these numbers, several organizations such as the Neuroscience Clinics of Florida Foundation Inc. (NSCFF) have been pouring funding into research and the promotion of Alzheimer’s awareness.

As part of the awareness campaign, a list of early signs and symptoms has been published. Some of these signs are forgetfulness and memory loss (enough to disrupt a daily routine), difficulties with communication (spoken or written), difficulties forming words, phrases, and complete sentences, difficulties completing normal daily tasks at home or at work, slips and confusion with time and dates, and minor mood swings or tweaks in personality.

Everyone is urged to consult a healthcare professional once these signs and symptoms show up. While there is no cure for the disease as of yet, there are ways to delay its progress, and come up with sound plans for the future.
