Performance Task.Baseball Ticket.Answers

You are writing an article for your school newspaper about the Oakland Athletics. Season tickets go on sale next week and you have been assigned to write an article to help fans determine whether they should buy season tickets or single-game tickets based on their expected attendance at the games this season.

Buying a season ticket allows you to attend all 81 home games for a single price. Without a season ticket you have to pay for every single game that you attend.

The table shows different ticket price options.

In this task you will answer six questions about the ticket price options and recommend which is best for fans. Be sure to show all your work for each item.

1. A season has 81 home games. If you purchase a season ticket in the bleacher section , what is the cost per game, in dollars for this ticket?

A season ticket in the bleacher section costs $810. There are 81 games in a season. If I divide $810 by 81 games I get $10 per game for a bleacher seat.

.2. Complete the table based on the single game ticket for seats in the Left field reserve section.

The cost of a left field reserve ticket increases by $20

3. Write an equation that represents the total cost, t, of buying a single-game tickets in the main box section.

t = 50s

4. Let s represent the number of games a baseball fan attends. Write an inequality that represents all values of a for which buying a main box season ticket is less expensive than buying single-game main box tickets.

$3,240 < $50s

Solve for s = $3,240/$50 = 64.8

So if s is > than 64.8. Because 64.8 games does not make sense I will round up to 65. So if s is greater than or equal to 65 it makes sense to buy a main box season ticket.

5. For the Bleacher section, what is the minimum number of games a fan needs to attend to make purchasing a season ticket a less expensive option, than single-game tickets. Include all necessary work to support your answer.

Purchasing season tickets will be less expensive when the number of single game tickets bought multiplied by the cost of one single game ticket, $12 is more than the price of season tickets, $810. To find this, I divided 810 by 12 to get 67.5, the number of games when the two plans are equal. So buying 68 single game tickets means that you would pay more than the price of the season tickets.

6. Your newspaper article will end with recommendations to fans about buying tickets. Your research indicates the average fan plans to attend 67 games during the season. What are your recommendations to the average fan about buying tickets? Should they buy season tickets or single-game tickets? Include all necessary work to support your answer.

Make a recommendation for fans by using tickets in each section:

  • Main box
  • Bleachers
  • Left field reserve

If a fan wants to buy Main Box tickets, I would recommend buying season tickets. If the fan wants to buy bleachers or left field reserve tickets, I would recommend buying single-game tickets.

For 67 games it is cheaper/less expensive for the average fan to buy season tickets in the main box (s>= 65 for season tickets), but cheaper/less expensive to buy single game tickets in the bleachers (s>=68 for season tickets) and left field reserve (s>= 69 for season tickets) . The least number of tickets needed for season tickets to be the best option is higher for bleachers and left field reserve.
