Vocabulary

Regardless of the class, vocabulary is focused on 5 to 7 words a week. Students will learn the words through classroom reading,writing, discussion, homework, quizzes and tests. The focus will be on

    • Connecting new vocabulary to background knowledge
    • Using the word many times

Vocabulary is focused on the 2000 most commonly used words in English. But students need to be prepared for academic text so the words are selected from a set of academic words developed by Coxhead (2000). An example of word from this list include proceed, logical, acquire and so on.

The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English provide the simplest and clearest definition for students.

If you are learning words there are a couple of strategies that will help you better understand vocabulary words;

    • Synonyms. A word or phrase that means exactly the same.
    • Antonyms. Learning opposite words.
    • Paraphrase. Express the meaning using different words to improve your understanding.
    • Write sentences to show you know.
    • Word sorting. Sort words in various categories
